Electrical Hookup & Beadboard

Today a small crew arrived and ran the underground cable to hook up the electric to the house. They say that within a couple of days some techs from the power company will arrive and move the meter from the temporary pole to the house.

During the past few days I've been installing beadboard plywood on the ceiling and in the loft.

It was a difficult task to do alone as the inside of the ceiling is sloped and gravity was working against me.  It took me several sheets before I figured out a reasonable way to accomplish it.

The space above the beadboard in the main part of the house and the east end gable wall will be covered with natural finish V-groove pine.

Tomorrow I'll get started painting the beadboard.

Vapor Barrier & Shovel Work

Today I finished insulating the floor (in the crawl space) and laying out the crawl space vapor barrier.  Happy to be done working in the crawl space as it's uncomfortable and awkward.

Vapor  Barrier

In the past few days a few inconvenient things have happened:

1.  During the building inspection I was told that I need a clean-out fixture between the house and the septic tank.  So, I'll need to dig up the waste pipe and put in the clean-out.

2.  The electric company came by to flag out the path for the underground power from the pole to the house.  When the driveway was put in the excavator put in a conduit running under the driveway for the power cable to run through.  For some unknown reason he left the end of the conduit north of the driveway exposed above ground but buried the conduit south of the driveway.  So, I need to dig that up so the power company can run their cable under the drive.

3.  Two days ago I got up and found my yard flooded.  Seems the underground water pipe broke.  So, now I need to dig up the water pipe and repair it.

I don't really like shoveling so I'm going to hire my grandson and a friend or two of his to do the digging for me.  Sounds like they're going to start tomorrow morning.

Once we locate the conduit under the drive the power company will come and hook the main meter to the house.  They, I'll have power in the house to all of the lights and outlets and won't need to use an extension cord from the temporary power hook up anymore.

Inspections & Ledger Boards

This week I passed my framing inspection, plumbing sewer inspection, plumbing water supply inspection and electrical inspection.

One thing I realized during the inspection is that I had wired for 110v for my washer/dryer based on the unit that I plan to purchase.  However, if i should replace it with another unit that requires 220v it would be a pain to wire for that after the fact.  So, today I wired a 220v outlet for a dryer.

Also, during the past few days I've been working on ledger boards for the eventual decks and carport.

It is a time consuming project.  The first step is to apply self-adhesive flashing tape to the side of the house that will be under the ledger board.

Then, level & install the ledger board.

Then install another layer of flashing tape that starts above the ledger board, covers the top and extends a bit down over the face.

Those photos are of the east wall where the primary deck area will be.  I also installed ledger board on the south wall which will have a 6' wide walkway leading to the front door and out to connect to the main deck. I had to temporarily disconnect my current ramp from the house and move it away so that I could install the ledger board and then move it back in and reconnect it.

On the west wall, at about the base of the roof slope I installed another ledger board which will allow for connection of a carport.

Doors & Windows Done

Today my son, my son-in-law, two grandsons and my daughter came and assisted me in installing the sliding door.  It is heavy and awkward to handle and in addition is about 6 feet above the ground so it took some doing to get it in place.

The door is the type with the blinds built in between the glass panes.

Windows & Door

The rest of my windows arrived.  I installed the bathroom & kitchen windows:

The west gable octagonal window has a wood frame so I needed to stain the outside and varnish the inside.

Then I had to frame the opening and install the window:

I installed the two living room windows:

And, I installed and painted the front door:

I still need to install the sliding door on the east wall but it is too heavy and awkward to manage alone.  So, hopefully, next Sunday my son Matt & my son-in-law Jason will come up and we can muscle it into place.

Roofing, Ridge Cap, Vent Pipe & First Window

My roofing order finally arrived and I got my final 2 1/2 panels installed.

All roof panels installed

Once that was done I installed the ridge venting material and the ridge cap.

I also got my vent pipe flashing and boot installed.

And, I got my first window installed.  This window is in the east wall gable.  It is a non-opening window as it is way up high.  The west end gable, in the loft, will also have a similar octagonal window but that one will open.

Lots of progress

Since the last post I've gotten a lot done. Finished the spackling and painting and painted the inside of the front door. I picked up a...
