Getting Started

Tiny House #2

Back in 2012 I began work on my THOW (Tiny House on Wheels).  It was built on a 36' trailer over the course of a couple of years.

You can find a blog about the construction process here an a video of the project here if you'd like more information.

After living in the house for several years I retired and decided that I wanted to do some traveling so I sold the house and purchased a 1975 VW bus and lived and traveled in that for several years.  More information about the bus is available here.

This year, in September, I was in North Carolina to visit some of my kids before starting my travels south & west and my daughter offered me a place to build a house on her recently purchased property.  She had purchased 3 adjoining lots the previous spring.  She will be building on one lot, her twin sister on another and I'll be building on the third.

This will be another tiny house, approximately 445 sq/ft including the loft, but this time it will be built on a foundation, not a trailer.  I had started to draw up some designs when I came across this set of plans for a 16'x20' cabin that I really liked so I purchased the plans and am just now getting started on the project.

The property is a bit over an acre at the end of a cul-de-sac.

The first step in the permitting process is to get the septic permit approval.  In order to do that I had to stake off the planned location of the house and clear underbrush so that pits could be dug for the septic permit.

Today, the Iredell county folks came out to check the property for approval of the septic permit.  I had to get a backhoe & operator here and they had him did 5 pits to make their decision, then they laid out the septic plan on the site.

The whole process took about 2 1/2 hours.  Now the county folks will go back and complete the septic plan which should be ready in about 1 1/2 weeks.  Next step after that is to get the building permit and start excavation.

Lots of progress

Since the last post I've gotten a lot done. Finished the spackling and painting and painted the inside of the front door. I picked up a...
